Design ain't just for direct mail anymore.
William Berry Campaigns, Inc. (WBC) launched a new division of their company - William Berry Designs! Recognizing that our award-winning design efforts could do more than pass bonds and put candidates into office, though we do that handily, the same creative team that designed those award-winning direct mail pieces, websites, radio and TV spots are now doing design work for private sector business, public agencies and non-profits. I
n our work of passing bond, tax and revenue measures, we have found that there are three different types of voters that campaigns must be aware of as they develop their campaign strategy and tactics. I call the voters “my family”: my father, my mother and my sister. My father is a 77-year-old, Republican, homeowner. He always votes. If the election were on Christmas Day he would go to church, pray for his children, and then go and vote. My mother is a 68-year-old Independent, homeowner. She always votes as well – but there are two things my mother needs in order to support a bond or tax measure. She wants to read the “War and Peace” version of the measure, so she can decide if it was well planed, well thought out and necessary. It is also helpful to wrap the details of the measure around a compelling story that my mother can identify with. Then, there is my sister. She’s a 40-year-old, single mother of two, who rents. She will almost always support a bond or tax measure. She has two kids in school, so she sees the direct benefit. And her kids will probably take a computer class or swimming lessons at the local community college. |

Cartoon Network Sharks |
I
was going to write this month about the power of word-of-mouth advertising, using that famous legend involving Richard Gere as an example, but P.E.T.A. got wind of it and threatened a boycott. So we’re changing subjects. We’re going to talk about authenticity. A few years ago, I decided to hire a guide to dive with sharks while I was in the Bahamas. It sounded dangerous, life affirming. It came with a video that I could show my friends to give them further proof that I’m fearless. Ten of us got boated out ¼ mile from shore and were lowered 40 feet down to the bottom of the ocean. The guides attached a huge “chumcicle” to a cement block on the bottom of sea. Within three minutes, dozens of white-tipped sharks appeared, biting away at the chum. Now, I watch the Discovery Channel. I’ve seen sharks. These weren’t Discovery Channel sharks. These were Oxygen Channel sharks and Cartoon Network sharks. |
